Proof of Citizenship
According to the U.S. State Department, as of January 8, 2007 all U.S. citizens traveling outside the U.S. to nations in the Western Hemisphere — including Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, South America, Central America and the Caribbean — by air or sea must produce a valid U.S. passport to re-enter the United States.

Other proof of U.S. citizenship required prior to January 2008 — often a certified copy of a birth certificate with a valid photo ID — will no longer be sufficient.

Passport deadlines are subject to change by Congressional act. Official information about the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative and passports can be found on the U.S. Department of State’s website at www.travel.state.gov/passport.
