Proof of Citizenship
According to the U.S. State Department, as of January 8, 2007 all U.S. citizens
traveling outside the U.S. to nations in the Western Hemisphere including
Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, South America, Central America and the Caribbean
by air or sea must produce a valid U.S. passport to re-enter the
United States.
Other proof of U.S. citizenship required prior to January 2008 often
a certified copy of a birth certificate with a valid photo ID will
no longer be sufficient.
Passport deadlines are subject to change by Congressional act. Official
information about the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative and passports
